I don't have it.

Så jag bjuder på lite djupare insikt i engelskans kollektiva substantiv för djur, för att det finns så otroligt många mystiska samlingsnamn, för att det är helt meningslöst och för att det bara är jag som är intresserad.





Terms of venery

"The tradition of using collective nouns that are specific to certain kinds of animals stems from an English hunting tradition, dating back to at least the fifteenth century. Terms of venery were used by gentlemen to distinguish themselves from yeomen and others and formed part of their education. Only a few of the terms were for groups of animals; others, such as "singular" for boars, described their characteristics or habits of life. Misunderstandings over the centuries led to all the terms being regarded as collective nouns and some became unrecognisable through changes to the language and transcription errors: "besynys" (for ferrets) became "fesynes" instead of "busy-ness""

• A nonchalance of cats
• An embarrassment of cats
• A murder of crows
• A storytelling of crows
• A skulk of fennecs
• A froggery of frogs
• A flamboyance of flamingo
• A loveliness of ladybugs
• A mischief of mice
• A conspiracy of raven

Vad som också är intressant är att substantivet ofta ändras beroende på vad djuren sysslar med samt deras ålder.
När man talar om ankor säger man tex "gaggle", men enbart när de flyger; i vattnet är det "paddling" som gäller.
Och vuxna katter är nonchalanta medans kattungar bara är pinsamma.
"A singular of boars" är särskillt intressant.
